Clubtails, in general, can be hard to tell apart, so I was pretty happy to get this photograph and be able to pick the species out.  The Black-shouldered Spinyleg (Dromogomphus spinosus) is large for a clubtail.

The combination of a whitish pale face and the clubtail, along with the size, makes it fairly easy to recognize.

Pattern is a better identifying feature than color for dragonflies. Note that most photographs show the light colors as more yellow, whereas in this photo, the patterns on the thorax and abdomen are more aqua.
